Thomas Hardy Trails

Description of Thomas Hardy Trails

Our Thomas Hardy Trails are extremely flexible. You can  do as much or as little walking through the rural landscape as you want, whilst visiting places that were pivotal in the writer’s life.

Although the starting place for any trail may be the countryside to the east of Dorchester, where can be found Hardy’s birthplace at Lower Bockhampton, his long-time home at Max Gate and the church at Stinsford, Footscape’s Thomas Hardy Trails may extend out into the wider Dorset countryside from where Hardy drew so much inspiration for his writings.

As the Thomas Hardy’s CottageMax Gate his adult home and also Clouds Hill , home of Hardy’s great friend T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) are all National Trust properties,  they may be closed during the winter months,  Please note entrance fees are not included in the price of the holiday (see below).

About the Thomas Hardy Trails

It is not necessary to be a Thomas Hardy buff to enjoy this holiday, but if his novels or poetry appeal to you, then you should find this to be a very evocative experience. The walks go to places that are closely associated with the life and work of Hardy, as well as with his famous friend, T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).

If you click the banner below, please be aware that things have changed a bit since the article was written the route itself has been improved and the “bear of a man” has been replaced by two new faces – one slightly less bear-like?
