Weymouth Independent Walking Holiday

Weymouth and Portland, occupying a prominent place on the Jurassic Coast Natural World Heritage Site, will be the spectacular setting for the 2012 Sailing Olympics.

Our three beautiful trails are very different one from another, with a mixture of sea cliffs, safe beaches, ancient ridge walks, mixed woodland, a bird sanctuary, historic sites and village pubs. As the holiday is based in Weymouth, with its abundance of things to do, it is a very attractive option for families with active children.

The first trail is an easy to moderate circular 8 mile walk around Portland. This distance can be increased by 5 miles by walking to or from Weymouth at the beginning or end of the day.

The second walk (either 7 or 10 moderate to strenuous miles), heads east along the Jurassic Coast to Lulworth Cove past spectacular Durdle Door.

The third day takes you inland to Dorchester (10 miles), with a choice of trail at the half-way point. You can choose to go over the iron-age hill fort of Maiden Castle to Poundbury (Prince Charles model village on the outskirts of Dorchester) or take an alternative (easier) path to Max Gate Thomas Hardys home for the last 40 years of his life (also on the edge of Dorchester).

Weymouth is reached in 3 hours by direct train or by car from London. During the period of this holiday, you will not require any transport of your own or from footscape.

Highlights of our Weymouth trails include:

  • The Georgian seaside resort of Weymouth
  • The dramatic Isle of Portland
  • Durdle Door, with its clear waters and beautiful beach
  • Lulworth Cove
  • Upwey Wishing Well
  • Lodmoor Nature Reserve (for birds)
  • The neolithic settlement and iron-age hill fort of Maiden Castle
  • Poundbury - a model community designed by the Prince of Wales
  • Max Gate - Thomas Hardys self-designed home of over 40 years
  • The historic town of Dorchester.

You can choose your own dates for this holiday, subject to the availability of accommodation. If you want to do the full trail, then you should opt for a 4 night holiday (or longer, if you would like to do something different for one or more days). You can also book a short walking break of 2 or 3 nights.

You will be accommodated in Weymouth, and will receive our detailed Weymouth Trail Guide, as well as the relevant ordnance survey map (with the footscape trail highlighted, as a back-up).

We will supply you with all other information that you will need for your holiday.
