Today, The 15th of December, Sherborne was visited by a special train bringing passengers to Sherborne from London Victoria for a little bit of Christmas shopping and sightseeing and the train was hauled by two former London Midland & Scottish Railway Black 5’s steam locomotives.

Passengers who alighted at Sherborne were greeted by Father Christmas who was handing out mince pies and Christmas cheer on the platform.

The main destination for the train was Sherborne, one of the most beautiful towns in England. The historic market town, where King Alfred was educated, was decorated for Christmas. It has much to offer visitors with its abundance of medieval buildings, superb Abbey, picturesque Alms house, the ruins of a 12th-century fortified palace, and the 16th-century Manor House known as Sherborne Castle. It has a delightful shopping centre with a large choice of handcrafted goods and elegant fashions and has become an important town in the region for Art and Antique Dealers. Whilst at Sherborne, passengers could join in a traditional Christmas Carol Service held in the splendid surroundings of its ancient Abbey, especially for the steam train passengers.

The train proceeded from Sherborne to Yeovil where it was able to use one of the last remaining turntables at Yeovil Railway centre where there was also a variety of rolling stock and an exhibition of railway artefacts and pictures in the Engine Shed.

The train returned to Sherborne later in the day to take passengers back to London Victoria and stops on the way.
