Jurassic Coast West Self-Guided Hiking Tour

This is predominantly a linear walk of up to 54 miles, covering the first (western) half of our scheduled Jurassic Coast trail, but including an extra fascinating loop around the “Isle” of Portland. You can select your own dates, subject to room availability, as well as the number of miles to walk each day. You can aim to do the full trail or else you can choose certain parts of it.

You will be accommodated in the attractive Georgian seaside town of Weymouth, which is reached by a direct train service from London Waterloo in 2 hours 45 minutes.

We will give you our detailed and informative Jurassic Coast West Trail Guide that includes step by step walking directions and interesting background material on places along the trail, as well as all other information that you might need for your holiday.

Thanks to the excellent Jurassic Coast bus service (and others), you will have no difficulty in travelling to and from the trail on those days that do not start or finish in Weymouth. There are special (cheap) tickets which allow you unlimited bus travel for certain periods of time including a week. You will receive the relevant timetables along with your Trail Guide.

Some of the key sites along the trail are:

• The fossil beach at Charmouth
• Golden Cap, the highest point on England’s south coast
• The beautiful village of Abbotsbury, with its historic Swannery and exceptional Sub-Tropical Gardens
• The magical lake of Bridehead in the remote village of Little Bredy
• The dramatic “Isle” of Portland and the amazing Chesil Beach
• Scenic Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

The trail itself (easy in parts and moderate to strenuous in others) is both stunning and varied. It starts at fossil-rich Charmouth and ends at Lulworth Cove.

This hiking tour is suitable for families with children, because there are many good, safe beaches and other places of interest to children along the trail, and your daily walking distances are very flexible. You can also take a day off any time you like.  There is no shortage of things to do in and around Weymouth (have a look at our links page).

Occasionally we may propose accommodation with a standard and price halfway between A1 and A2.

We can sometimes offer family rooms and special prices for children, depending on the accommodation that is available at the time, but early booking is advisable. Please give us details of your requirements.
